Westminster Abbey facade

Westminster Abbey in Westminster, London, England is an impressive Gothic church located to the west of the Palace of Westminster. This lovely London church – on the scale of a cathedral – is the burial site and place of coronation for English monarchs. Since the coronation in 1066 William the Conqueror, all English and British sovereigns have been crowned in the Abbey. The beautiful throne on which British monarchs are seated at the moment of coronation is called St Edward's Chair and it is housed within Westminster Abbey.

Many royal vaults were discovered in Westminster Abbey, some dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. In 2005 the ancient burial vault of Edward the Confessor was discovered in front of the High Altar. Aristocrats were buried inside chapels and monks and people associated with the Abbey were buried in the cloisters and other areas. Some poets were also buried in Westminster Abbey, in an area known as Poets' Corner. It was considered an honour to be buried here.

Some of the people – including monarchs - buried in Westminster Abbey are: Henry III of England, Edward V of England, Richard II of England and wife Anne of Bohemia, Mary I of England, Elizabeth I of England, Charles II of England, William III of England, Mary Queen of Scots, Charles Darwin, George Graham, David Livingstone, Sir Isaac Newton, The Unknown Warrior, Robert Browning, Thomas Campbell, Charles Dickens, John Gay, Sir Henry Irving, Laurence Olivier, Dr Samuel Johnson, among many others.
