Trafalgar square, Nelson's column
Trafalgar square, Nelson's column

Trafalgar Square in London, England is a very popular site in the city that commemorates The Battle of Trafalgar, a British naval victory in 1805 during the Napoleonic Wars.

The square has a big central area and large stairs leading to London National Gallery. In the centre of the square you can see the famous Nelson's Column with a statue of Lord Nelson, the admiral who commanded the British Fleet at Trafalgar. Nelson’s Column is surrounded by four impressive bronze lions sculpted by Sir Edwin Landseer and fountains designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1939.

Trafalgar Square is not only a major tourist attraction but also an important symbolic social and political location. It has several significant statues like George Washington and James II in front of the National Gallery. You can also admire the statue that honour Washington's declaration that he would never again set foot on British soil – a gift from the state of Virginia, United States of America.
