The four huge lions located in the famous Trafalgar Square of London, England are beautiful bronze statues created by Sir Edwin Landseer. The story says that Sir Landseer had never actually seen a lion, so he used dog feet to create the giant bronze claws.

At the corners of Trafalgar square there are four plinths. Three of them hold statues - George IV, Henry Havelock and Sir Charles James Napier. The fourth plinth has always been controversial and agreement couldn’t be reached over which monarch or military hero to place there. In 1999 the Royal Society of Arts occupied the plinth with works from contemporary artists – ‘Ecce Homo’ by Mark Wallinger in 1999, ‘Regardless of History’ by Bill Woodrow in 2000 and ‘Monument’ by Rachel Whiteread in 2001. After this project plinth in Trafalgar Square stood empty for several years so finally the new Greater London Authority started another series of temporary exhibitions – ‘Alison Lapper Pregnant’ by Marc Quinn in 2005 and ‘Hotel for the Birds’ by Thomas Schutte scheduled for 2007. Quinn's Alison Lapper Pregnant is a 3.6m marble statue of Alison Lapper, an artist who due to a condition called phocomelia was born with no arms and shortened legs.

On the north side of Trafalgar Square you will find the London National Gallery and on the east side the lovely St Martin's in the Fields church.
