Trafalgar Square in London, England is a very popular site of the city visited by tourists and Brits all year long. It is also a venue for political demonstrations and the place where people get together to celebrate sports victories. Trafalgar Square has become the perfect location to the climax for victory parades for the England National Rugby Union Team and it was also the place chosen for celebrating the victory of the England National Cricket Team victory against the Australia national cricket team in The Ashes. In 2005 London citizens gathered in Trafalgar Square to hear the announcement that they would host the 2012 Summer Olympics.
To the east of Trafalgar Square is South Africa House. Throughout the 1980s anti-apartheid protests were held opposite the building. The square was also the scene of a major vigil held after the terrorist bombings in London on Thursday 7 July 2005.
The lovely Trafalgar Square has also been the scene of riots. On ‘Black Monday’ – 8th February 1886 - protesters rallied against unemployment and this led to a riot in Pall Mall. A larger riot called ‘Bloody Sunday’ also occurred in Trafalgar Square on 13th November 1887.
