St.Paul's cathedral front
The fourth St Paul's Cathedral to be built in London is known as ‘Old Saint Paul’s’ and was built by the Normans after a fire in 1087. The Normans were descendants of the Vikings and were the people who gave their name to Normandy, a region in northern France. Many years after the construction of the church, new works started to enlarge the Cathedral and by the time they were completed (1314) Saint Paul’s was the third-longest church in Europe.
From Sunday, 2nd September to Wednesday, 5th September 1666 there was a major fire in London known as ‘The Great Fire of London’. This terrible catastrophe burnt central parts of the city and ‘Old St Paul's’ was one of the buildings destroyed by the fire. The beautiful construction that you can now see in London dates from the 17th century and is generally reckoned to be London's fifth St Paul's Cathedral.
