Lion in Trafalgar Square
Lion in Trafalgar Square

‘Nelson’s Column’ is a famous monument located in Trafalgar Square, London. The column was built between 1840 and 1843 to commemorate Admiral Horatio Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 (Horatio Nelson, 1758 – 1805, British admiral famous for his participation in the Napoleonic Wars). The beautiful granite column is 46 metres high (151 ft) and is decorated with bronze. It has a big statue of the admiral on the top.

The outside diagonals of Nelson's Column are guarded by impressive lions sculpted by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802 – 1873), a talented English painter and sculptor. Landseer was famous for painting extremely quickly and using both hands at the same time. He usually painted animals, such as dogs and horses.
