Downing Street

Downing Street is a very famous street located in central London, England near the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace. It was built by and named after Sir George Downing - a soldier and diplomat who served under Oliver Cromwell and King Charles II.
In Downing Street you can see the building that has been for more than two hundred years the official residence of the First Lord of the Treasury, that is the residence of the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown (successor of Tony Blair). The Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Chief Whip also live in houses on one side of Downing Street. The most famous address is 10 Downing Street - the official residence of the Prime Minister. The houses on the other side of the street were replaced by the huge Foreign Office in the 19th century.
After the 1997 General Election the British Prime Minister in that time, Tony Blair, moved with his wife and three children into the more spacious Number 11. However, 10 Downing Street continued to be the prime minister's official residence and contain the prime ministerial offices.
