The great Tower Clock in Westminster, London is known as ‘Big Ben’ - this is actually the nickname of the clock’s main and largest bell. The building is also known as St. Stephen’s Tower or The Tower of Big Ben.

The amazing Big Ben Clock has four faces and it was designed by Augustus Pugin. The hour hand is 2.7m / 9 feet long and the minute hand is 4.3m / 14 feet long. At the base of each clock face you can read the Latin inscription 'Domine Salvam Fac Reginam Nostram Victorian Primam' which means 'Oh Lord keep safe our queen Victoria the First'.

During World War II the beautiful western face of the clock was damaged by German bombing. The Palace of Westminster was also hit by the bombs and the House of Commons was destroyed.
