Tower Bridge in London, England is located on the River Thames. It’s an elegant suspension bridge and one of the most famous constructions in London. London Bridge - also famous world wide - is the next bridge upstream.

In the 19th century London needed a new bridge crossing the River Thames so a special committee opened the design to public competition. Finally, the design chosen was the one submitted by Sir Horace Jones - an English architect knighted in 1886.

The construction of the Tower Bridge started in 1886 and took eight years. To support the amazing construction two huge piers containing over 70,000 tons of concrete were sunk into the River Thames. Sir Horace Jones died in 1887 and George D. Stevenson took over the project. He decided to replace Jones’ original brick facade with an elaborate Victorian Gothic style. Tower Bridge was finally opened on 30 June 1894 by the Prince of Wales - future King Edward VII.
